This morning I am finishing up slides for a lunchtime talk on Biblical trees that I am giving at a Jewish community center in Palo Alto. They had a speaker scheduled who cancelled a few days ago, so they reached out to the Master Gardener office to try to find someone to speak on trees for Tu B’Shevat, the New Year for Trees. Jewish gardener to the rescue!
I am covering the Old Testament (our Torah) trees that are part of the Seven Species named as main food-bearing plants: olives, dates, figs, pomegranates. Also almonds, which are all over the Middle East and regarded unofficially as the Eighth Species. My slides describe the tree’s physical characteristics, how it flowers and fruits, care in a home orchard, and its history in California. Pretty simple deck, but researching it leads me down all kinds of fascinating side-paths. Most people don’t find Powerpoint much fun, but when the topic is dear to your heart, it doesn’t feel like work, it feels like fun. It’s only a 30 – 45 minute lunch presentation, so it’s zero-stress, yay. |
