I'm unfortunately getting a crash course in lost-cat searching, as my cat went out last night and hasn't come back yet. I don't let her out at night, she did a dusk-dash and disappeared. She's 12, and I've raised her from a kitten whose eyes were just changing color. 😦
The Fix Our Ferals site has links to Pauline's magnificently thorough advice for searching for cats, especially indoor cats, who tend to have 1 of 3 personality types.
Humane Society of Silicon Valley: 408-727-3383, but you have to go in person. If an animal is scared or combative, they wait to scan it until it is calmer. They will call you if they scan your pet, though.
Both of my cats have different ID chips, even though they were chipped only a couple of months apart, by the same vet's office. So I had to call two different registries to check. The good news is that shelters use a cross-registry system, and/or have a mapping for which ID numbers go where. The Home Again folks told me that my non-missing cat's chip was a Trovan chip based on the first 3 numbers, not one of theirs.
A comprehensive list is here: http://rfid.home.att.net/pet-chip.htm
A dog-oriented list, including tattoo registries, is : http://www.dogrescuelist.com/registeries.html
The big message is don't give up, as the sites are full of stories of dumb or scared cats who hid and mooched from neighbors less than a half mile away for weeks or months. I am going to go out and make flyers and put them in mailboxes.
Booster!!! Where is the Booster?! Mommy says, “come home! come home!”
