Reading the excellent essay Red Family, Blue Family, I found a sentence that explains far too many interactions in my life, and my general frustration with most of 'nerd culture'.
“If you frame our discussion as a cooperative search for truth, and I frame it as a game I am trying to win, odds are excellent that you will get angry and I will think you are a sore loser.”
Aren't all discussions and interactions supposed to be a cooperative search for truth? Isn't that why we're here? And why I feel upset and ashamed when I catch myself 'playing the game'– trash talking, doing one-upmanship, etc?
Sigh. Me space alien. But coping.
