I remember that at one point my dad had a small collection of silver certificate dollars, historic bills from when the US dollar was still tightly-coupled to a precious metal supply. That's why Fort Knox existed– it was storing gold and silver that could be, in theory, redeemed by holders of silver or gold certificate dollars.
Now some folks have created a private currency, Liberty Dollars, to bring back metal-backed currency. I know that individual states can't mint their own money. Apparently these dudes have been doing this for a few years and nobody has shut them down.
Possibly, “yet”. Tempting, though!
