The wonderful knife holder is back in stock, I got email from the company.
Unfortunately Mike thinks it's more horrific than funny, so I'm refraining from getting one. It'd be cool to have it in the kitchen, next to a copy of “knife throwing for dummies”. Maybe I'll try making a non-boring knife block of my own. One thing I do like about the Ex5 knife holder is that it's completely pass-through, so you can dishwash it. Regular slot knifeholders collect “stuff”, and even if you turn 'em over and shake 'em now and then, well, still ew.
Magnabars can be great, but I'm still grouchy about them. I had a whole set of Gerber balance plus kitchen knives which I brought with me when I went to VA to live on Barron's farm for a while in, um, 1986-ish. When the cabin was burgled, the thieves grabbed all the knives except the one that was jumbled in the sink with dirty dishes. Where it shouldn't have been anyway, but that's another story, and it's a good time of year to be charitable. But I've been sore about magnabars ever since, even though the same thing probably would have happened if the knives had been in a block or in a drawer.
