Fantasy Life, Kristine Kathryn Rusch Nice writing style, strong female characters, interesting world. Pacing a bit uneven, but not glaringly so. If you like Charles de Lint's “urban fantasy” worlds, you will probably like this. Small town on the Oregon coast where some odd things live…including several generations of women of an old family, who seem to act as the protectors, and intermediaries, between, nature, the town, and some very odd 'folk'. I'm going to look for more stories by this lady, and hope to find ones set in this world as well as others of her creation.
Fairy Godmother, Mercedes Lackey Friendly fluff, with a nice little world built around it. Interesting magic system– in the world of fairy tales, there's an overriding force of 'Tradition' that tries to make lives into familiar stories. Witches, Wizards, Sorcerers/esses, and Fairy Godmothers are those who can leverage this. Engaging characters, human and non. This is another of Lackey's fantasy-romance novels, where a plucky heroine finds her match. One thing I like about these is that the heroine and the guy don't just settle down and stop being interesting– it's a given that she is going to keep being a plucky heroine and he'd better just deal with it. One thing I dislike is that she seems to be getting more explicit in describing the love scenes, and that just doesn't mesh well with her style, at least IMHO. It's a good read to spend an afternoon when one ought to be doing something more productive, though, such as not being home Sick.
