Within recent history (7 – 14 days) the car had developed a Stupid Trick: go over a bump a highway speed and the speakers cut out. Well, I thought, that's stupid. And annoying. I'll have them look at it when I take it in to be serviced.
Car was serviced yesterday. They said, “we aren't really a stereo shop, but we can recommend someone”. I didn't push back. Drive to work, there for approx 4 – 5 hours, drive home. Car sits for 14 hours, until this morning, when I jump in to catch the train to SF to a meeting for a new contract. Car-y no start-y. In fact, car-y no start-y in a bad scary way– I can hear the sound of the starter *through the speakers* like a machine gun, and when I stop and remove the key, I continue to hear hissy noises through the speakers for a few seconds.
*Very* bad juju. “We aren't really a stereo shop” my arse– it must be an honest to Feynman *electrical short* somewhere, put some electronic diagnostics on that and find the bugger.
And yet, ultimately it's my fault– I figured it was probably just a loose speaker wire somewhere, but thinking again that doesn't fit the behavior, as it wouldn't reconnect itself on subsequent bumps. I'm guessing that maybe something is being pinched or rubbed in the door where Mike took it apart to run the cables for the ham radio installation. Dunno. Tow truck here gotta run.
