Time to go out back at night with a flashlight again. The cold temps had kept snail activity in the garden to a minimum recently, but this morning was different.
I noticed two cloves sprouting on the garlic bulb on the kitchen counter, so I broke off those cloves and went out to plant them. Depredation! Two whole baby summer squash, eaten down to the stems. Leaf damage. An entire bean plant stem-girdled and falling over. Silver everywhere, but no trail back to the culprit. Grrr!
Two more bean plants came up, long after I'd given up on any more arising. So technically I'm 'ahead' but not really. GRRRR!
Sowed two more rows of sugar snap peas in the ground– haven't had good luck with ground-sown peas yet, but maybe these will be different. New seed batch, heirloom sugar snaps from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Germination rate recorded at 87% on the packet, so I oversowed; we'll see what happens.
Also filled the clear clamshell case with dirt and sowed soybeans, giant spiky zinnias, and mexican sunflowers (red, orange, yellow mix).
Oh yeah, no sign whatsoever of the carrots I carefully sowed into vermiculite a few weeks ago, then covered with compost more recently. I'll have to try sowing into a sprouting case, although carrots don't transplant well. Would really like some Nantes half-longs, or baby ball carrots for salads.
